Research Interests

Foundations of quantum mechanics: measurement theory, the uncertainty principle, and in particular, the understanding of the nature of photon. Our experimental and theoretical research investigates the quantum mechanical non-local correlations between entangled two-photon and multi-photon systems. These entangled quantum states are prepared by modern optical methods, lasers and nonlinear crystals. Our recent experimental studies have demonstrated the existence of strong non-local quantum correlations in spin variables and space time variables for two-photon entangled states. These experimental results are helpful for understanding of the nature of quantum world.

Experimental investigation of general relativistic space-time and gravity theory. We are investigating experimentally the second order timing effect on the rotating earth by using modern optical methods. This has applications, for example, in the high sensitivity laser gyro. Experimental investigation is ongoing to study suitable nonlinear crystals for high reflectivity, high stability phase conjugators.

Applied nonlinear optics and laser physics. The above fundamental physics research has great potential applications. For example, the intrinsic quantum nature of the entangled multi-photon state has been considered for future optical communications and optical image transfer. Experimental and theoretical studies of two dimensional graphic optical image transfer by using our entangled two-photon source are being carried out in our laboratory. An absolute quantum efficiency calibration technique is under development in cooperation with NIST.
