Graduate Fellowships in Atmospheric Physics

The Physics Department has the following special fellowships available for Ph.D. students:

EVERYTHING BELOW HERE IS UNDER REVISION, AND MAY BE OUT OF DATE

The Physics Department has two special fellowships available for incoming Ph.D. students:

GEST GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP IN ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS

The UMBC Physics Department invites applications for the GEST Graduate Fellowship, for graduate study leading to the Ph.D degree in Atmospheric Physics. The Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology (GEST) Center is a consortium of scientists and engineers, led by UMBC, to conduct scientific research in Earth and information sciences and related technologies in collaboration with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This GEST sponsored Graduate Fellowship includes a $30,000/yr stipend, tuition waiver and full health benefits. This fellowship is available for study starting in the Fall 2002.

A wide range of research opportunities are available for the recipient within the Department of Physics, including collaboration with research scientists in the GEST Center (http://www.umbc.edu/gest/ ), or with Physics research faculty in UMBC’s Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET, http://www.jcet.umbc.edu/).

The Physics Department has 14 faculty/research faculty involved in various aspects of atmospheric physics with a general concentration on satellite observations and atmospheric radiation covering much of the electromagnetic spectrum.  UMBC graduate programs promote cultural diversity in the sciences and have a long history of successfully training minority students in the sciences.

The Physics Department recently moved into a new $25,000,000 building with outstanding research facilities. UMBC is located with easy access to all the research facilities and cultural activities in the Baltimore/Washington, DC metropolitan region. For full information giving the conditions of the GEST Graduate Fellowship see http://physics.umbc.edu/ or write: Graduate Admissions, Department of Physics, University of Maryland Baltimore County, 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, MD 21250, physics@umbc.edu, or telephone either (410) 455-2513 or (877) 707-1969 (toll free). UMBC is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Equal Access/Institution.

GRADUATE MERIT FELLOWSHIP IN ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS

The Physics Department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a Special Merit Fellowship for graduate study leading to a Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric Physics. This fellowship is for 12 months and carries a stipend of $25,000 plus tuition remission up to 20 credits and health benefits. This fellowship is available for study starting in the Fall 2002.

A listing of the research opportunities in the department and the conditions of the fellowships can be seen at http://physics.umbc.edu. Additional research opportunities are available in atmospheric physics via the UMBC/NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET), http://www.jcet.umbc.edu. The Department recently moved into a new $25,000,000 building with outstanding research facilities.

UMBC is located within easy access of all the research laboratories and cultural activities in the Baltimore/Washington, DC metropolitan region.
