Research

The Department of Physics currently consists of 22 tenured or tenure-track faculty and approximately 40 graduate students. Research expenditures exceed $6,000,000 per year, including funding from the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Office of Naval Research (OSR).

Research opportunities include high-energy astrophysics, atmospheric lidar, satellite atmospheric spectroscopy, electro-optics, nano-particle alloys, photorefractive polymers, quantum optics & lasers quantum computing, and information, space radiation effects, semiconductor photonics, and surface & interface physics.
