Last Updated: 2006 Jan 19

Internships provide a means whereby students can gain valuable experience and insights into the research environment. The Internship opportunities available via the Physics Department cover the broad range of physics research underway on campus, plus research in Astrophysics & Earth Sciences underway at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC) in Greenbelt, Md. There is a single application procedure (& deadline) for both undergraduate and graduate students interested in any of these opportunties.

Broad Science Areas Covered

The Physics intern program covers the full range of research going on within the department itself, and within the affiliated research centers, namely
The Center for Advanced Studies in Photonics Research (CASPR).
The Goddard Earth Sciences Technology Center (GEST)
The Joint Center for Astrophysics (JCA)
The Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET).
The GEST & JCET centers are collaborations including UMBC and the Earth-Sun Exploration Division of NASA/GSFC. The JCA is a collaboration between UMBC and the Exploration of the Universe Division of NASA/GSFC.

In a given year, opportunities may exist in the following broad areas (listed alphabetically).

Potential applicants should note that suitable projects may not exist in every topic, every year. Further details of the specific projects available in a given year can be found by clicking on the appropriate 'More Info' link. Questions regarding specific projects should be addressed to the appropriate contact person listed above.

Eligibility

The internships are open to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in an appropriate science or technological field. As noted in the above links, several of the projects have specific requirements as to courses you have taken (& passed).

Due to security measures imposed by the Federal Government, there are some restrictions on non-US citizens working at NASA/GSFC. If you are a foreign national (even if you have a "Green Card"), and interested in one of the projects based at GSFC, you should check with the appropriate contact person listed above.

Compensation and Support

The rate of pay is $8-$10/hr for undergraduate (based on experience), and $15/hr for graduate students. There are no health/retirement/etc benefits associated with this program. Reimbursement for Travel & Accomodation will be determined on a case-by-case basis (check with the appropriate contact person listed above).

The nominal work period is 10 weeks starting in the first week of June (but excluding Federal Holidays such as July 4th).
(The exact start date & duration will be determined by the project mentor.)

Application Procedure

Starting 2006, applications for this program will be processed using the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences Online Form.

Deadline: 2006 March 16 (5pm)
Applications prior to the deadline will receive full consideration, and students can expect to be contacted within one month. Applications received after this date will be considered only if there are opportunties still available.
