Professional Interests

Dr. Rubin is a theoretical physicist who has published papers in a number of fields.  In the past ten years his work has been concentrated on quantum optics stimulated by the challenge to our perception at the foundations of modern physics by the introduction of quantum theory. The development of technology is moving closer to limits set by nature rather than by our skills. This means that understanding the foundation of quantum theory is becoming more important. At UMBC theoretical and experimental research aimed at understanding the non-classical behavior of light has illustrated behavior that cannot be reproduced by classical electromagnetic fields and has clarified the nature of the entangled two-photon state produced by parametric down conversion. Interesting practical applications of our research have been to metrology and quantum imaging.  Expanding on this work, theoretical studies of efficient sources of two-photon states using four-wave mixing and slow light have recently been completed. In addition, Recent studies have extended our work to three photon.

The paper of Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen led Schrodinger to introduce the term entanglement for a superposition of states of subsystems that may be far apart. Entanglement is one of the most fascinating and puzzling aspects of quantum physics. The general characterization of entanglement is a difficult mathematical problem.  A study of this problem has been carried out in collaboration with a colleague in mathematics.
