TITLE: Taming Quantum Fluctuations: Some ado about nothing
ABSTRACT: Fluctuation-induced phenomena are a fascinating and fundamental feature of quantum electrodynamics (QED), with implications spanning spontaneous emission of atoms, decoherence of macroscopic quantum superpositions, stability of colloidal suspensions such as milk, adhesive properties of gecko feet, stiction in nano- and micro-mechanical machines, and, potentially, the accelerated expansion of the universe. In this talk, I will review the various ways to shape and engineer quantum fluctuation phenomena. Particularly, quantum fluctuation phenomena play a significant role in the state-of-the-art nanoscale quantum systems that are relevant to emerging quantum devices and technologies. I will discuss our work on tailoring fluctuation-induced forces, dissipation and decoherence in such systems using an open quantum systems perspective.
