New quantum info course starting Spring 2020

PHYS 612: Quantum Information Physics

This course gives an introduction to the fundamental concepts of quantum information processing with an emphasis on the physics of its implementation. The focus is on the nascent field of quantum computing, with some results in quantum communication discussed as well. The course progression will follow the textbook of Nielsen & Chuang, though we will skim quickly over ideas that you have seen already in PHYS 601 and add more recent developments that are not in any textbooks yet.

Academic Objectives

By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of

• Why a quantum computer is expected to provide exponential improvement over a classical computer.

• Basic quantum algorithms, such as Deutsch-Josza, Grover, and Shor.

• The physics of the various types of qubits currently being developed.

• The basic ideas of quantum key distribution for cryptography.

• Outstanding physics challenges that must be overcome to realize the quantum technology revolution.
