Dr. Shih held a postdoctoral research associate appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UMCP for two years before joining UMBC.
My major research field is quantum optics, which involves the use of modern optical technologies to study and to probe the foundations of quantum theory. My laboratory has been recognized as one of the leading groups in this research field. My recent research interests are focused on quantum entanglement, multi-photon interferometry, and quantum imaging. One of the most surprising consequences of quantum mechanics is the nonlocal behavior of a multi-particle system. Although questions regarding fundamental issues of quantum theory still exist, nonclassical surprises have started to play important roles in practical applications. Quantum imaging is one of these exciting areas. The pioneering experimental demonstrations of ghost imaging and ghost interference at UMBC stimulated the foundation of quantum imaging. My other research interests are in the field of experimental general relativity. My current research involves the experimental study of light propagation in rotating coordinate system.
