TITLE: What is quantum thermodynamics?
ABSTRACT: Thermodynamics and statistical physics are among the most versatile frameworks in theoretical physics. Although originally only invented to understand and improve steam engines, thermodynamic principles have been proven applicable and powerful in virtually all areas of physics, ranging from single colloidal particles to cosmological objects. In this colloquium, Prof. Deffner will outline the main pillars of his research agenda, which focuses on the thermodynamic description of nanoscale devices that process information. This is motivated by concentrated efforts around the world that seek to develop quantum technologies, of which quantum computers are a prominent example. However, currently available hardware is still subject to detrimental noise and control limitations, that to date have prevented practical applications exploiting the full quantum advantage. The prevalent theory to describe the fundamental physics of noise and dissipation, as well as methods to control and mitigate detrimental effects in quantum systems, is quantum thermodynamics of which Prof. Deffner generally considered a leading expert.
