Astro Careers Lunch Seminar

This Friday from 12:00-1:00 in PHYS 201 we will have a presentation from technical staff (scientists and engineers) working at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore.  STScI is responsible for the Hubble Space Telescope and upcoming James Webb Space Telescope and work closely with NASA/Goddard to manage the telescopes and support their science mission goals. They employ over 600 people in many fields, from astrophysicists and physicists (from the B.S. to PhD level), to computer scientists, to materials engineers, and many more (public outreach, etc).  They will make a short presentation on the careers available (including summer and year-long internship opportunities) at STScI as part of a push to have a better connection to UMBC students.  In other words, they want YOU to apply to openings at STScI (there is an upcoming deadline for Research and Instrument Analyst positions on March 10th, more info here: https://rn11.ultipro.com/SPA1004/JobBoard/JobDetails.aspx?__ID=*DC4E3E5A8B43F5C3).

This event is for ANYONE who is interested in potentially working at a place like STScI or NASA, even if you are just starting out in your studies at UMBC.  In fact, part of the goal of the presentation is to ensure that you get the skills you need to be good candidates for these jobs.  PhD students are also welcome, as STScI hires at all degree levels.

There will also be a short presentation on the Astrophysics Minor at UMBC, also appropriate for those in the first years who may not be aware of the minor and its benefits for a career at a place like NASA or STScI.
