Dr. Todd Pittman Brings the Weirdness of Quantum Entanglement to Perry Hall Library

Dr. Todd Pittman, Director of UMBC’s Quantum Science Institute and Professor of Physics, gave a lively and accessible public lecture on November 12, 2025, at the Baltimore County Public Library’s Perry Hall Branch. Community members of all ages gathered to hear Dr. Pittman trace the surprising history of quantum mechanics and quantum entanglement—from its early conceptual debates to groundbreaking experiments and Nobel Prize–winning discoveries.

Dr. Pittman also highlighted UMBC’s influential role in advancing the field, including foundational contributions by Morton Rubin, James Franson, and Yanhua Shih. His enthusiasm for the subject was unmistakable, and his approachable style encouraged a remarkably long Q&A session—more than thirty minutes of thoughtful, challenging questions that ranged from the fundamentals of quantum mechanics to modern implementations and the future possibilities of quantum science.

It was an engaging evening that left attendees with a deeper appreciation of both the mystery and the impact of quantum physics.
